My Goodbye to Letterman

There was a time when I was younger and people asked why I got into broadcasting and who my influences were. I would tell them about the Johnny Carson box set of VHS tapes my dad would play for me…I’d then rewind the hours of tape back and play them all over again. That was my idea of Late Night, what I thought was the most entertaining thing on the planet, and the laughs and emotions felt so genuine…Then a former friend ripped that answer off from me and started using it to promote himself. I haven’t kept tabs on him so I don’t know how that worked out, nor do I care.

As I got older, Late Night TV became a part of my daily routine. Some people have the 10 o’clock news; I have the Conan O’Brien string dance. Some people have SportsCenter; I had Craig Ferguson trading innuendos with a gay skeleton robot. And while many people my age enjoy Jimmy Fallon’s millennial-grabbing, trendy guest-dependent bits, I watched Letterman.

Carson loved David Letterman. Letterman was HIS choice to take over the Tonight Show, and NBC went with Jay Leno. Carson would actually fax jokes over to Letterman’s staff because he read the paper, thought up 5 jokes, and wanted to hear them in Dave’s monologue that night. He even made his last ever television appearance on Letterman’s show.

The Carson connection drew me to Letterman. Why did Johnny like Dave so much? Simple…He was funny.

I like Letterman because he really doesn’t care what you think of him or his show. He told some really bad jokes, and he would tell them over and over again until they were funny. He would call for a random ass clip in the middle of a segment, the Top 10, or even an interview with zero relevant content… and it was hilarious. And if the audience wasn’t sure about something he said, all it took was a lick of his teeth and pull of a bass guitar to roll with it.

I watched Letterman because his interviews had value to them. Celebrities use talk shows to promote their projects. They’ll maybe go by a script from their publicists or say/do something that will make them go viral. The conversations that Dave had with his guests felt way more honest than that. If he respected his guest, you knew it and he would have fun with them. If he wasn’t very familiar with his guest, he’d make it weird and get whoever it was out of their comfort zone for great TV. If the guest had a controversial or questionable reputation, Letterman wouldn’t take it easy on them. I’ll never forget his interview with Lindsay Lohan where he pulled zero punches…actually read jokes he had made about her.

The rehab questions like “How will this time be any different?” are what stuck out the most to me from what turned out to be 14 minutes of great television.

I loved Letterman for the music. It begins with his sidekick, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra. Is there nothing they can’t play? They are remarkably great individual musicians that form a group with a personality that comes to life each and every night. It’s cool when artists like John Mayer and Todd Rundgren sit in and jam for entire shows, and even cooler when the band plays behind a superstar…like Eddie Vedder.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a5rWox3C1I&app=desktop

The quality of the sound was always fantastic. You know how bands and artists ALWAYS sound awful on Saturday Night Live? Complete opposite on Letterman. While I enjoyed seeing established veteran performers do their thing, I was even more interested in the up-and-comers. Dave seemed to be especially intrigued by new artists as well and he provided a platform that could be regarded as groundbreaking….and on the same stage the Beatles were introduced to America on. Jack White and R.E.M. are some notable acts who made their network debuts on his show.

With some of the reasons I mentioned earlier, Letterman was punk rock to me. It was his show and he did what he wanted. So before I say goodbye to the man tonight with teary eyes, and sharing the experience with my father (like I have so many times before), I’ll now say goodbye to Paul and the CBS Orchestra, Director Jerry Foley, Executive Producer Jude Brennan, EP Barbara Gaines, EP Rob Burnett, Head Writer Matt Roberts, Writer Bill Scheft, Announcer Alan Kalter, Stage Manager Biff Henderson, and Todd the Intern…

And see ya later, Dave.

Feel free to join the conversation and share some memories with me during the final show on Twitter at @Mike_PiFF03.

Mad Men of MLB

They premiered the same night…

The “Final Episodes” of Mad Men and the 2015 Major League baseball season.  Both gave us the feel of nostalgia, with some new little twists as well…

ESPN with their K-Zone and Roger with his Mustache.

image2 (2)

The both have served as our pastime. They have captured American history in their own ways. They have kept us at the edge of our seats with drama unlike any other. They are also both HEAVILY sponsored.

As we say “goodbye” to one and “hello” to the other, let’s compare further and identify the true “Mad Men” of MLB.

Pete Campbell / Bryce Harper, Nationals

image3 (1)

Pete Campbell and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals ascended to stardom very quickly in their own way. Harper has an NL Rookie of the Year and a couple of All-Star games to his name while Pete has “Partner” as a title and Clearasil. While both are very successful, they’re also polarizing and even hated by fans. Although they may rub people the wrong way, you will rarely see them with their heads down due to a wealth of confidence…unless Pete’s in trouble.

Don Draper / Derek Jeter, Yankees

image4 (1)

Derek Jeter may be retired, but Don Draper began his farewell tour last year too. They were the faces of their organizations and legends of their craft. While Don and Jeter may not have been putting out their best work at times, they were still perennial all-stars. They also could field a pretty strong batting lineup with both of their dating histories. And they both could sell ANYTHING

Peggy Olson / Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies

image5 (1)

Peggy Olson was Don’s protege and Troy Tulowitzki has taken the reigns as the best shortstop in the league post-Jeter. The time is now for both of them. Tulowitzki has been held back by injuries while Peggy was held back by sexism in her industry. And as they show off their talents, they have become hot commodities to other teams as well.

Roger Sterling / Tony La Russa

image6 (1)

I attended Tony La Russa’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony last summer, and listening to him talk about his days as both a player and a manager reminded me of the war stories Roger Sterling tells to his clients. Neither one can stay away from the game as Roger continues to sell whatever he can while La Russa just recently took a job as chief baseball officer for the Diamondbacks. Neither one minds a midday cocktail either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NASspMMnjxo

Joan Harris / Jose Abreu, White Sox

image7 (1)

On the outside, Jose Abreu is a 6’2, 260 pound Cuban baseball Jedi and Joan is a redhead with curves like a Formula One track. These two have a lot more in common than you’d think…They both joined the majors late in their careers but made an instant impact when they got there. Joan spent years in the secretary ranks and jumped to partner while Abreu went from playing for the Cuban national team for years to MLB All-Star and unanimous AL Rookie of the Year. They also have the savviness and experience to adjust on the fly and last for a long time to come.

Ken Cosgrove / Billy Hamilton, Reds

image8 (1)

I think we all have our favorite characters from TV shows that are no more than supporting to the story, and won’t even appear in some episodes. Ken Cosgrove is exactly one of those characters for me because he is the “Mr. Hustle” for the Sterling Cooper agency. The same can be said about Billy Hamilton of Cincinnati, whose 56 stolen bases in his first full season ranked him 2nd in the majors. Hamilton’s OBP isn’t the best for a leadoff man (.290), neither is Cosgrove’s, but he makes the opponent pay when he gets his chances.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmxGNpJYwY4

Betty Francis / Max Scherzer, Nationals

image9 (1)

I guess this could be said about many of Scott Boras’s clients, but Betty Francis (formerly Draper) is a money chaser. Max Scherzer was one of the last high priority free agents to sign this past winter because he was waiting on the 7 year, $210 million deal that Washington happened to have lying around. And he gets to count his cash like Scrooge McDuck when he isn’t pitching every 5th day in the league’s deepest rotation. So another name that we call Betty applies to Scherzer…Frontrunner. However, there’s a reason they got to where they are now…

Megan Draper / Mike Trout, Angels

image10 (1)

Out with the Betty, in with the new…Megan Draper, I mean. Megan was Don’s MVS (most valuable secretary), so much so that he put a ring on it. Megan also took advantage of the opportunity quickly, much like Mike Trout when he hit the big leagues. Both were under-appreciated at first, as Trout was working for an MVP nod and Megan continuously auditioned for TV roles. Both got what they wanted and both are California dreaming.

Stan Rizzo / Anthony Rizzo, Cubs

image11 (1)

Besides the obvious (last name), both actually have a lot in common. Both Stan and Anthony had rough starts to their careers. Anthony only hit .141 in his first Major League stint with the Padres, and Stan was a sexist jerk…Both have improved immensely and serve as glue guys for their respective teams. Stan grew a beard, found recreational drugs, became best buds with Peggy and is no longer a jerk. Anthony has become an All-Star and isn’t afraid to mix it up with opponents to defend his teammates. Yep, glue guys.

National Pizza Day: Great Pizza Moments in Movies & TV

Did you grab a slice yet today? Why not? You didn’t know?

It’s National Pizza Day!

Pizza Day GIF

Now you may be asking, “who decided this?” IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO DECIDED THIS! IT’S PIZZA!

So let’s commemorate the occasion properly and take a look at moments in television and film that made us hungry enough to call for delivery.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad pizza

Most fans can pinpoint it to Season 3 Episode 2, but how did that pepperoni pizza get up on that roof?

Walter?…Don’t you do it!…Dammit, Walter.

Home Alone

Home Alone Pizza

How many immature jerks, I mean kids, tried this themselves? I imagine it was a rough go for delivery guys nationwide during the 90s.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT Pizza

We’ll forgive the Turtles for their choice of Dominos only because they live in a sewer. And because corporate sponsorship and all…

Wayne’s World

Wayne's World pizza hut

Speaking of corporate sponsorship…

Mad Men

Draper Pizza

Not really any physical pizza being involved, but clearly Peggy has what we all do on her mind…Hey! Get your head out of the gutter!

Back to the Future Part II

Back To The Future Part II

Not only did they try predicting the next time the Cubs would go to the World Series, but also the way we ate pizza. I’m okay with them being wrong about the latter.

The 2014 Academy Awards

Ellen Selfie

While Ellen was breaking the internet with the world’s greatest selfie, she was also throwing the world’s greatest pizza party…C’mon. Brad Pitt was passing out plates.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Fast Times Pizza

“Who ordered the double cheese and sausage?” Probably the best pizza moment in cinematic history.

So…

Whiplash pizza

Have another great pizza moment in mind? Comment here or Tweet @Mike_PiFF03. Now go get some pizza!

Golden Globes Picks 2015

The Golden Globes are fun.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will describe it best (again) on Sunday: The annual chance for movie actors and TV actors to get made fun of, get drunk, and probably touch each other. Hard to tell who is which anymore just by looking at the categories. Steve Carell nominated for Motion Picture Drama awards, Clive Owen and Viola Davis nominated for Television awards…The only wall left standing is the one defending the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones. (I know.)

While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association wasn’t too far off in their Movie nominations, Television is still a head scratcher. I could rant for hours on how badly Mad Men, Homeland, Parks and Recreation, and Modern Family were snubbed, but that’s not why you called…

Like I said, the Golden Globes are fun. Award shows in general are fun and so is making picks. So without further ado…

Tina Fey Amy Poehler00

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

– Julianne Moore, Still Alice

– Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl

– Reese Witherspoon, Gone Girl

– Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything

– Jennifer Aniston, Cake

Winner: Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore is being touted as the runaway favorite, and rightfully so. 0 for 6 at the Golden Globes, 0/4 at the Oscars, ‘Still Alice’ is her Steve Young moment..Felicity Jones will be my sleeper pick though. She’s incredibly charming and moving in ‘The Theory of Everything’.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

– Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

– Steve Carell, Foxcatcher

– Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game

– David Oyelowo, Selma

– Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler

Winner: David Oyelowo

Unbelievably loaded category, yet it still feels like a 3-man race between Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, and David Oyelowo. I give Redmayne points for his transformation, but I give the award to Oyelowo for overall performance. Steve Carell and Jake Gyllenhaal get huge kudos as well for making my skin crawl.

David Oyelowo

Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy

– Julianne Moore, Maps of the Stars

– Amy Adams, Big Eyes

– Emily Blunt, Into The Woods

– Helen Mirren, The Hundred Foot Journey

– Quevenzhane Wallis, Annie

Winner: Emily Blunt

This category is very “meh” to me, but Emily Blunt stands out the most. Somehow she was able to appear natural in a musical…and that’s no easy task.

Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy

– Michael Keaton, Birdman

– Bill Murray, St. Vincent

– Ralph Fiennes, The Grand Budapest Hotel

– Joaquin Phoenix, Inherent Vice

– Christoph Waltz, Big Eyes

Winner: Michael Keaton

Bill Murray in ‘St. Vincent’ defines this category but Michael Keaton, well…I’ll just leave this here.

Birdman levitate

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

– Patricia Arquette, Boyhood

– Jessica Chastain, A Most Violent Year

– Keira Knightly, The Imitation Game

– Emma Stone, Birdman

– Meryl Streep, Into The Woods

Winner: Emma Stone

Emma Stone. Emma Stone! EMMA STONE!…If I say her name 3 times she appears, right? The range she showed in ‘Birdman’ is exactly why I’ll be picking her throughout awards season.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

– Robert Duvall, The Judge

– Ethan Hawke, Boyhood

– Edward Norton, Birdman

– Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher

– J.K. Simmons, Whiplash

Winner: J.K. Simmons

I truly believe ‘Birdman’ was Edward Norton’s greatest performance. Any other year he would be a lock, but J.K. Simmons IS ‘Whiplash’. He terrifies you like you’re in his college jazz ensemble.

Best Picture – Drama

– Boyhood

– Foxcatcher

– The Imitation Game

– Selma

– The Theory of Everything

Winner: Selma

This category is missing Birdman, but that’s okay. This was a great year in film and Selma was remarkably able to stand out. The acting by the entire cast was phenominal and the filming was was perfect to invoke its message.

Best Picture – Musical/Comedy

– Birdman

– The Grand Budapest Hotel

– Into The Woods

– Pride

– St. Vincent

Winner: Birdman

‘Birdman’ is the best film of the year. I’ll explain why come Oscars week. Sorry to the rest of the field. Good job, good effort.

Best TV Series – Drama

– The Affair

– Downton Abbey

– Game of Thrones

– The Good Wife

– House of Cards

Winner: House of Cards

I’ve been very vocal about how badly the Golden Globes messed up with their TV nominations. Homeland, Mad Men, and Sherlock not getting the respect they deserve baffles me. With that said, Netflix should be thanking them because ‘House of Cards’ is the best among those nominated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBSP-SqGYkA

Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama

– Claire Danes, Homeland

– Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder

– Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

– Ruth Wilson, The Affair

– Robin Wright, House of Cards

Winner: Claire Danes

Claire Danes should win as consolation for the disrespect shown to Homeland. It wasn’t just a bounce back season for the show, but also for her character. Robin Wright is also very deserving.

Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama

– Clive Owen, The Knick

– Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan

– Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

– James Spader, The Blacklist

– Dominic West, The Affair

Winner: Dominic West

Someone call Sherlock because someone stole Benedict Cumberbatch’s nomination here…Dominic West should win because he is the only reason to watch ‘The Affair’, but personally I’m pulling for Liev Schreiber.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfrDF1qQFbs

Best TV Series – Musical/Comedy

– Girls

– Jane The Virgin

– Orange is the New Black

– Silicon Valley

– Transparent

Winner: Silicon Valley

OITNB gets some help moving to a comedy category that is missing ‘Modern Family’, but ‘Silicon Valley’ is the better show. But seriously, no Modern Family? Have they seen Modern Family?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE4LVSESyXc

Best Actress in a TV Series – Musical/Comedy

– Lena Dunham, Girls

– Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

– Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

– Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin

– Taylor Schilling, OITNB

Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

I love Gina Rodriguez, but I learned to stop picking against JLD a long time ago.

Best Actor in a TV Series – Musical/Comedy

– Louis C.K., Louie

– Don Cheadle, House of Lies

– Ricky Gervais, Derek

– William H. Macy, Shameless

– Jeffery Tambor, Transparent

Winner: Ricky Gervais

Go on Netflix. Watch Derek. Then you’ll know.

For the rest of the categories I care about, my picks will be covered by 2 words…

True Detective

NFL Week 16 Fantasy Mailbag: CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK

In football, many say “defense wins championships”.

In Fantasy Football, scoring more points than your opponent wins championships. I actually find that accurate in all sports, both fantasy and real. That has been your goal on a week-to-week basis, and the overall goal was to be competitive for THIS WEEK.

(As I have noted for weeks now) If your league is waiting to hold its championship for Week 17, this is all I have to say to your league’s commissioner…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5d5jxJ5vbM

Do you really want to leave THE CHAMPIONSHIP up to suspicion that key fantasy players will be sat in the final week of the season for rest until the playoffs? Look at the standings, the AFC Specifically…

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 12.39.24 PM

If you have contributors from the Broncos (Manning, Anderson, Sanders, and both D. & J. Thomas), the Patriots (Brady, Gronk, Edelman) or the Colts (Luck and Hilton), there is good chance they will get minimal reps or not even play to be preserved for the post season.

But back to this week…

How did we get here? I don’t know each every one of your seasons week-by-week, but I can chronicle mine to relate.

It started with a The Draft.

Yes, I know some of these picks are cringe worthy in hindsight…

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.02.17 PM

8 of my 14 picks are no longer on my team. That is evident by my 0-6 start to the season.

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.06.48 PM

And then came the moves. Up until today, I’ve made 39 adds/drops but here are the ones that mattered. (Along with a rotating defense week to week because Cincinnati’s DEF/ST couldn’t be consistent)

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.14.04 PM

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.15.09 PM

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.16.55 PM

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.18.45 PM

I included Denard Robinson as a part of the key moves, because my wide receiver situation has been awful and it was nice to have his consistency in my WR2 slots. With the recent news of Julian Edelman’s concussion, I’m left making this last move hoping for points from at least one of my WR slots.

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.24.46 PM

So thanks to the waiver wire, I went 6-1 to clinch a playoff spot…

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.31.33 PM

Yes, revenge was sweet…but a 6 game win streak to reach the championship was even sweeter. And it was further proof of how right Kevin Garnett was (as much as it pains me to)

The point is that you shouldn’t get discouraged after a bad start. Even a month and a half into your Fantasy season, there’s a lot of football left. Now you’re left clenching on to everything and anything for the most suspenseful 5 days of your season…

Quick Hits

  • Whether you call him ODJ or ODB (that’s my choice), Odell Beckham Jr. is balling out. In his past 2 weeks, Beckham has caught 23 passes for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns on 30 targets…more than anyone in the league. The 2014 rookie wide receiver class is one that is drawing comparisons to the 1983 quarterback class, and it seemed as though Mike Evans was leading the pack with his NFL leading 11 touchdowns…but now Beckham has launched himself into the conversation for “who’s better?” He’ll have an opportunity to improve his side of the debate against a Rams defense that hasn’t faced an elite receiver since Demaryius Thomas in Week 11, who caught 7 passes for 103 yards.
  • I mentioned two quarterbacks last week that I expected to rebound after tough Week 14 games. Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense appear to be in December mode: Being smart with the football, keeping Manning upright, and riding the success of their running back, CJ Anderson…Drew Brees on the other hand, looked like Drew Brees again on Monday Night Football. I actually got to watch him throw dirt on the grave of the Chicago Bears’ 2014 campaign, in person. It was awkward…What else is worth noting, Brees is leading the league in completion percentage at 70% and red zone touchdown passes with 24. And this is a down year for him. This week, Brees faces a Falcons defense that has allowed 290+ yards to their last 7 opponents. Brees also has multiple touchdown passes in 13 of 16 meetings with Atlanta as Saints quarterback.

Brees TD

  • Keep in mind, this week’s NFL schedule is weird. There are two Saturday games being played, Philadelphia vs Washington at 3:30 CT and San Diego vs. San Francisco 7:30 CT. So set your roster accordingly…And then there’s tonight’s edition of Thursday Night Football: Titans vs. Jaguars. Sounds awful, right? I’m still making a play from this game with an un-good wide receiver situation…Nate Washington. There’s gotta be some offense from somewhere tonight, and I see it going to Washington who caught 6 passes on 10 targets for 102 yards last week. Even if Kendall Wright returns tonight, Washington is expected to be the focal point against the league’s 28th ranked defense.

Piff’s Picks: The 66th Primetime Emmys

The VMA’s may have taken place last night but for me, the Emmys mark the true start of Award season. (No offense to MTV…wait, all offense to MTV). The Emmys are a celebration of America’s favorite pass time, Television. This is an evening to remind us why we keep coming back for more, week-to-week. Performances that keep us up late at night, binge watching full seasons because we can’t get enough. Storytelling that forces a society hung up on technology to put the phone down.

Tonight’s Emmys, as much as any, boast a field of nominees that would kill in any other year. Unfortunately, only one nominee can win from each category. Looking at a few of the major categories, I’ll make my picks to win and trust me…it won’t be easy.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series – 2014

– Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison (Homeland)

– Robin Wright as Claire Underwood (House of Cards)

– Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawly (Downton Abbey)

– Lizzy Caplan as Virginia Johnson (Masters of Sex)

– Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope (Scandal)

– Juliana Margulies as Alicia Florrick (The Good Wife)

Winner: Robin Wright

Why: House of Cards is one of the few shows that you don’t have to wait week-to-week for every episode, thanks to Netflix. In season 2, we see the rise of Spacey’s Francis Underwood continue in true anti-hero fashion. Instead of the typical push back for morality that you see in other series, Frank’s persona is fueled by his better half, Claire. Robin Wright’s portrayal of Claire Underwood is Godfather-esque. She is complicated, shrewd, compelling, sexy, and terrifying all at once…and I love it.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

– Bryan Cranston as Walter White (Breaking Bad)

– Kevin Spacey as Francis Underwood (House of Cards)

– Jon Hamm as Don Draper (Mad Men)

– Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy (Newsroom)

– Woody Harrelson as Marty Hart (True Detective)

– Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle (True Detective)

Winner: Matthew McConaughey

Why: This is the toughest category of the night, and it’s more than the two-man race that most people are calling it. Jon Hamm RESURRECTED Don Draper and I believe he will get his due next year when Mad Men finally wraps up. Bryan Cranston has an opportunity to tie Dennis Franz for the most Lead Actor wins with 4, and is more than deserving after giving Walter White his much deserved final bow. But the performance McConaughey gave was too good to deny. The True Detective audience felt every emotion possible while following Rust Cohle track down the “Yellow King” and I think his partner, Marty Hart, put it best:

“You are like the Michael Jordan of being a son of a bitch.”

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

Anna Gunn as Skyler White (Breaking Bad)

– Maggie Smith as Dowager Countess of Grantham/Violet (Downton Abbey)

– Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates (Downton Abbey)

– Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)

– Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris (Mad Men)

– Christine Baranski as Dianne Lockart (The Good Wife)

Winner: Anna Gunn

Why: The final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad were a roller coaster like no other and that was thanks to the raw human emotion we found in its characters, especially Skyler White. Anna Gunn ended Maggie Smith’s reign of terror in the category last year and rightfully so. That level of performance did not waiver in the follow up and that’s why Gunn seems like the clear winner. If there is an upset candidate, it’s Lena Headey who received her first nomination. Cersei is the Queen we love to hate, and she made the most of her appearances this season on Game of Thrones.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

– Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman (Breaking Bad)

– Jim Carter as Mr. Carson (Downton Abbey)

– Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)

– Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson (Homeland)

– Jon Voight as Mickey Donovan (Ray Donovan)

– Josh Charles as Will Gardner (The Good Wife)

Winner: Aaron Paul

Why: This is another loaded category for Drama actors and further evidence to how good TV has been in recent years. Game of Thrones fans are going to get firmly behind their champion, Peter Dinklage, and they should. Tyrion Lannister was about as punk rock a character as you could find in the Thrones 4th season. Mandy Patinkin is good in everything. EVERYTHING. Saul Berenson was why I watched Homeland last year. And Jon Voight’s Mickey Donovan is always a party. But when we talk about someone “leaving it all on the field”, that was Aaron Paul in the final 8 episodes of Breaking Bad. Jesse Pinkman will forever be one of TV’s great characters and I can say that without hesitation because of the effort Paul gave over the course of the entire series. “Yeah, bitch!”

Outstanding Drama Series

– Breaking Bad (AMC)

– Downton Abbey (PBS)

– Game Of Thrones (HBO)

– House of Cards (Netflix)

– Mad Men (AMC)

– True Detective (HBO)

Winner: Breaking Bad

Why: You’ve heard it for months now. Breaking Bad or True Detective? While I do think that will be the case tonight, I think credit is due for Mad Men. By giving it the Breaking Bad treatment, splitting the final season into two separate 8-episode runs, I get the feeling Don Draper and his colleagues will be popping a lot of champagne next year. True Detective really is a mini-series, an open-and-closed case that heightened our senses for each one of its 8 episodes. That won’t take away from the show and it shouldn’t. The acting was flawless. But try and remember those feelings you had watching the end of Breaking.

Some may call it a “Lifetime Achievement Award” for Vince Gillian, but it’s much more than that. You were sucked into the story, hanging onto its every word and genuinely scared of how it will end. True Detective vs. Breaking Bad is really “Good Guys vs. Bad Guys”…and this time, it’s good to be Bad.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

– Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath (Girls)

– Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn (Mike & Molly)

– Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton (Nurse Jackie)

– Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman (Orange is the New Black)

– Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)

– Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President Selina Meyer (Veep)

Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Why: I won’t deny it, I am actually rooting for Amy Poehler here. 12 nominations and nothing to show for it? That’s not right. Being the central character for one of TVs true comedies needs to be awarded before its end. Critics LOVE Julia Louis-Dreyfus though and why not? Veep is sharp as hell and Louis-Dreyfus fits her role as well as anybody could. However, I’ve learned to not count anyone out ever again after the Jeff Daniels upset of 2013. That was awesome.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

Ricky Gervais as Derek (Derek)

– Matt LeBlanc as Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)

– Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan (House of Lies)

– Louis C.K. as Louie (Louie)

– William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher (Shameless)

– Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)

Winner: Ricky Gervais

Why? I think most people assume Jim Parsons is taking home his 4th Emmys win. I’d vote for him too…if I hadn’t seen Derek. Derek is a show that will make you laugh, cry, laugh again, then repeat every episode. Ricky Gervais’ title character is the sole reason for that, and that could be enough to dethrone Sheldon Cooper.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

– Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy (Modern Family)

– Allison Janney as Bonnie (Mom)

– Kate Mulgrew as Red (Orange Is The New Black)

– Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live)

– Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler (The Big Bang Theory)

– Anna Chlumsky as Amy Brookheimer (Veep)

Winner: Kate Mulgrew

Why: Critics love Allison Janney. I don’t. If I can’t watch you show (because I didn’t like it), then I can’t pick you. Kate Mulgrew may be getting discounted because of how “new” OINTB is, but I don’t think that will be the case tonight. Red is a character that owns the room every scene she is in. I have trouble saying that about the other characters in this category (and Kate McKinnon in general).

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

– Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

– Adam Driver as Adam Sackler (Girls)

– Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy (Modern Family)

– Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitch Pritchett (Modern Family)

– Fred Armisen (Portlandia)

– Tony Hale as Gary Walsh (Veep)

Winner: Ty Burrell

Why: Phil Dunphy. That is all.

Outstanding Comedy Series

– Louie (FX)

– Modern Family (ABC)

– Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)

– Silicon Valley (HBO)

– The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

– Veep (HBO)

Winner: Modern Family

This category can go in many directions. Orange Is The New Black and Veep have a ton of momentum going into the night with boatloads of nominations. Big Bang Theory is still getting the best ratings of any comedy on TV. Louie feels like it’s on the cusp of winning and Silicon Valley is a show that should put everyone on upset alert. But Modern Family continues to be the comedy I can’t wait for week-to-week, with a guaranteed belly laugh every episode. If Modern Family wins tonight, the show will tie Frasier for winning 5 straight “Best Comedy” Emmys in its first 5 years.
