Michael’s Mixtape – The First

A week ago in San Diego, a friend that I don’t get to catch up with often enough asked me about the music I was listening to these days…

For a second I blanked, but then everything came rushing to my head like a waterfall. So I felt it would be fun to log the music I’m listening to and share it with all of you. It varies between new and old music, but it’s all good to me. Music is a very subjective thing for people, and that’s what makes it very cool to me.

While I’m sharing this first Mixtape list here (with music accompaniment of course), I’ll also have a public Spotify playlist for you to check out as well.

Here goes nothing…

1. “Multi-Love” – Unkown Mortal Orchestra

2. “Big Decisions” – My Morning Jacket

3. “Firestone” – Kygo

4. “The Wolf” – Mumford and Sons

5. “Shake and Tremble” – Django Django

6. “Trying” – Bully

7. “The Best Room” – Modest Mouse

8. “Sunshine on My Back” – The National

9. “Bad Dream” – The Mowgli’s

10. “Sedona” – Houndmouth

11. “Don’t Wanna Fight” – Alabama Shakes

12. “Cold Feet Killer” – My Goodness

13. “All This Could Be Yours” – Cold War Kids

14. “Kansas City” – The New Basement Tapes

15. “Lonesome Street” – Blur

16. “Earthquake Driver” – Counting Crows

17. “Billie Jean” – The Civil Wars

19. “Wild World” – Joanna Wang

20. “Major Tom” – Shiny Toy Guns

21. “I Don’t Want To Be Here Anymore” – Rise Against

22. “We Will Fall Together” – Streetlight Manifesto

23. “Gwan” – The Suffers

Time To Exhale – Avengers: Age of Ultron

A week after the premiere felt like the proper amount of time to digest Marvel’s “Phase II” epic, Avengers: Age of Ultron and to comprehend what that was I saw in IMAX 3D.

Rather than write a “review” of the movie, I consider this as a collection of thoughts and reaction regarding what I saw on the screen and heard from people after. If you haven’t seen the film, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER. THERE ARE PROBABLY, MORE THAN LIKELY, SPOILERS! I would recommend going to see it and coming back to this for discussion though.

So let’s begin now…

Avengers: Age of Ultron wasn’t great, but it didn’t have to be…

The movie itself was a blast. The action scenes were incredible and it was cool to see each Avenger have fighting chemistry with their teammates right off the bat as they took on Baron von Strucker’s snow covered Hydra base…most notably the combo uses of Thor’s hammer and Captain America’s shield. The banter and Joss Whedon’s influenced snappy comebacks also kept the mood light…not just with the Avengers while they experienced their own turmoil, but with Ultron himself (which I’ll talk about further on).

However, the editing was choppy and there were some excruciatingly slow moments that took away from the action packed ride. A comment from WGN and Rivet Radio host James VanOsdol stuck out to me on Twitter when he referred to it as “The Age of Dulltron”,  right before I went to see the movie. I really don’t blame him for thinking so, but I also found a lot of the film to be more necessary than anything.

Much of ‘Age of Ultron’ was heavy for character development and plot…especially for what’s to come in “Phase III”. (Here Come Some of Spoilers so it’s on you now if you haven’t seen the movie)

I’ll begin with the day dreams that Scarlet Witch placed in each of the Avengers’ minds, whom were effected:

Tony Stark: Tony is the first to have a spell casted on, which sparks the creation of Ultron…and his apparent “heel turn“. While getting a good look at von Strucker’s basement weapons of mass scariness, Scarlet Witch casts her spell, which forces Tony to envision his greatest fear…He sees all of his Avengers teammates laid up on meteor-like platform, either dead or dying. It looks like something we’ve seen Thanos standing upon in his collective brief appearances. Tony is the last Avenger standing while Captain America grabs for him, and in his dying breath says “You could have saved us.” And so begins the tension we see between Tony and Cap throughout the film, foreshadowing to the plot of Captain America III: Civil War.

Tony also gets a good look at what appears to be a fleet of aliens on their way to annihilate Earth…So much for Earth’s mightiest heroes. My instant thought was, “Is this a look at the eventual endgame film, Infinity Wars?” This would be a good time to call the Guardians of the Galaxy, right?

Thor: This was the other more significant vision that was casted by Scarlet Witch. During the run-in with Ultron in Wakanda, Scarlet Witch’s purpose is to tear apart the Avengers from within their minds. Thor’s dream involves him seeing Asgard in absolute terror, and a one-on-one battle with Heimdall (played by Idris Elba). Heimdall blamed Thor for what appeared to be war and destruction in his supposed kingdom, which eludes to the next Thor film “Ragnarok”. Ragnarok refers to Asgard’s version of the apocalypse. With Loki on the throne posing as Odin and Thanos in hot pursuit of infinity stones, seems like a recipe for that kind of disaster. Thor’s vision does prompt him to further investigate the significance of the infinity stones and who may be after them, so it all makes sense.

Black Widow: Natasha’s vision seemed more relevant to the present than what could happen in the future. It also gave the audience some insight to how she came to be and how she views herself. I actually correlate it more with the storyline from the ‘Agent Peggy Carter’ series, as we saw Russian girls being trained to become absolute killing machines for presumedly Hydra. I’ll go into Black Widow’s storyline (and apparent backlash) later, but this dream did seem to go on for too long.

Captain America: I don’t think Scarlet Witch’s spell caused conflict for Steve Rogers as much as it helped him overcome a hurdle in his arc. The hopeless romantic in me was excited to see Steve finally getting that dance with Agent Carter, even if it wasn’t real. Captain America’s mindset had been stuck in the past for more than 3 films now and it was about time for him to leave it there. Having the opportunity to start SHIELD back over and run the New Avengers training facility gives him purpose again. Captain America can finally be the new man that came out of the ice…not the one that was frozen there.

I’d be terrified to see what Bruce Banner saw in his vision…

Ultron was SO James Spader…

It was really hard to not picture Red from ‘The Blacklist’ or Robert California whenever Ultron spoke…

Ultron was very much more human than I anticipated. He cared about being compared to Tony Stark. He cared about what he looked like. And he cared about Scarlet Witch…That last part may have surprised me the most.

I liked that about Ultron. He showed some vulnerability throughout the film that you don’t get from robots or computer programs, like Jarvis. That’s what made Vincent D’Onofrio’s adaptation of The Kingpin so good in Daredevil. At times, you found yourself rooting for the villain…until he did something so despicable that it was hard to keep the pom poms up.

I never found myself rooting for Ultron, but I did consider him to be likable. He was very witty, with some Tony Stark influence. A comparison to Loki would be fair, with better one-liners. Ultron didn’t seem to like hurting innocent people, not until the end at least. Even when he cut off the hand of Ulysses Klaue (played by Andy Serkis…yes, the same guy who does the voice of Gollum from Lord of the Rings) in a fit of rage, he felt bad about doing it…at first.

You could try to compartmentalize what Ultron was doing. He was designed by Tony to protect the Earth, not necessarily humans. And although an attempt to eliminate billions of people sounds pretty harsh, he did seem to care for a few…the Inhuman Maximoff twins, that is. But at the end of the day, Ultron wasn’t going to do much past this film and it’s for the better that The Vision took care of that.

The Black Widow thing…

There has been a lot of backlash toward the way Black Widow was depicted and I don’t really get it. Are superhero romances a little weird in movies that are meant to be that action packed? Maybe…But didn’t it make sense? A comparison I liken Natasha and Bruce Banner to is that of another Joss Whedon produced couple…Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Referring to the vision she had under Scarlet Witch’s spell, Natasha explains that she is no less of a monster than Banner is as the Hulk. There’s nothing wrong with sympathizing with two characters you don’t expect to do so with. Like Buffy, Natasha has lived a life of killing and sticking to the mission. Like Angel, Banner has always been the one terrifying EVERYONE. What’s the matter with either of them growing in a way you wouldn’t expect?

Then there is the perception that Black Widow was portrayed as a “damsel in distress.” – You realize that the Avengers wouldn’t have found Ultron if she hadn’t been taken captive and created her own makeshift radio/homing beacon, right?…And continued to kick ass in an almost impossible battle.

Other things…

  • The introduction of Klaue and Wakanda segway to the eventual debut of Black Panther, who was confirmed today to appear in Cap 3: Civil War along with Ant-Man. Since Wakanda is now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ll see more references in Ant-Man this summer or perhaps get the debut of Black Panther/T’Challa
  • The “my girlfriend’s better than your girlfriend” argument Thor and Stark have is adorable, but I wish Jane Foster and Pepper Potts were actually in the movie.
  • When do Agents of SHIELD finally appear in the Marvel films? With Agent Coulson “dying” and igniting the team in the first film, wouldn’t they be thrilled to see him in the second? The Agents would probably have loved dealing with the Maximoff twins as well.
  • I liked the Avengers take on Quicksilver. Obviously with FOX having the rights to X-Men, he had to be very different than the Evan Peters version. Still good, but THIS will forever be one of my favorite superhero movie scenes ever.
  • Hawkeye may have been the funniest character in the whole movie, and having him as a moral compass (kind of like Coulson) was refreshing compared to the first film.
  • The Vision RULES! And that’s all I’ll say about that.
  • With Thanos assumedly jumping into the action, how soon do we see him come face-to-face with an Avenger? My bet is Thor 3: Ragnarok, as he is hunting for the Infinity stones in Asguard’s keeping. Thanos would also bring the type of chaos that Loki would want…and also regret.
  • Anyone else stay ALL THE WAY TILL AFTER THE CREDITS? Of course you did. And you were disappointed when you found nothing, like I did.

My Picks: The 2015 ‘Awful Announcing’ People’s Sports Media Awards

Awful announcing opened its voting for their 2015 People’s Sports Media Awards, and I really enjoyed the hell out of it…

I encourage you to go vote yourselves, but I thought I’d share my picks and why I made them.

1) Best Live Event Coverage

– EPL on NBC
– World Cup on ESPN
– Sunday Night Football
– College Football Playoff on ESPN
– NCAA Tournament on CBS/Turner

My Pick: NCAA Tournament on CBS/Turner

Why:

The drama really sells itself with the tourney, but the production really outdid itself this year. Only CBS/Turner could make long stretches of back-to-back missed shots feel compelling, but seriously…

Ron Hunter falling off his chair, UAB over Iowa State, crying Nova piccolo player…And to do so without Steve Kerr and Greg Anthony too?…Thanks, Raftery. And “One Shining Moment”.

2) Best Sports Documentary

– Playing for the Mob (ESPN)
– Verne Lundquist: In Your Life (CBS)
– I Hate Christian Laettner (ESPN)
– The Day the Series Stopped (ESPN)
– Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker (MLB Network)
– Of Miracles and Men (ESPN)

My Pick: Of Miracles and Men (ESPN)

Why:

One of the greatest athletic achievements in the history of the United States, in the view of its opposition. Enough said.

3) Best Studio Show

– The Men in Blazers Show (NBCSN)
– College GameDay (ESPN)
– Inside the NBA (TNT)
– World Cup Tonight (ESPN)
– Match of the Day (NBCSN)
– That Other Pregame Show (CBS Sports Network)

My Pick: Inside the NBA (TNT)

Why:

This show is about as entertaining as it gets and Charles Barkley is a big reason for it. Shaq feels forced and awkward, but they make the most of his deficiencies with humor. When Kenny Smith isn’t spoiling slam dunk contests over the public address system, he is an excellent analyst. And Ernie Johnson’s bowtie game is flawless…I considered College GameDay, but the celebrity picker segment can be a mixed bag and makes me want to change the channel.

4) Best Daily Show

– Olbermann (ESPN2)
– Fox Sports Live (Fox Sports 1)
– Outside the Lines (ESPN/ESPN2)
– PTI (ESPN)
– The Dan Patrick Show (NBCSN)
– MLB Tonight (MLB Network)
– SportsCenter 11 PM ET (ESPN)

My Pick: The Dan Patrick Show

Why:

The Dan Patrick Show is my kind of show. I would love to work on that show and with their team. They have excellent chemistry including the producers on topics with Patrick. Nothing is forced. There isn’t an agenda. And it’s entertaining each and every day…even when there are guest hosts for the show.

This used to be SportsCenter for me, but they care more about debates and analysis from “experts” I don’t want to hear from than the highlights I want to tune in for.

5) Best Studio Host

– Rebecca Lowe (NBC)
– Rece Davis (ESPN)
– Liam McHugh (NBC)
– Rob Stone (Fox)
– Adam Zucker (CBS)
– Bob Ley (ESPN)
– Ernie Johnson (Turner)
– Lindsay Czarniak (ESPN)

My Pick: Rece Davis (NBC)

Why:

This was the toughest field because all of those recognized are great enough for votes, but Rece Davis is my guy. Extremely excited to see him take over College GameDay for football season because he’s a natural. Excellent charisma, fun, informative, great chin…

Rece Davis

6) Best Studio Analyst

– Pedro Martinez (Turner)
– Greg McElroy (SEC Network)
– Charles Barkley (Turner)
– Joel Klatt (Fox)
– Seth Greenberg (ESPN)
– Kyle Martino (NBC)
– Clark Kellogg (CBS)
– Doug Glanville (ESPN)

My Pick: Charles Barkley

Why:

Barkley. Is. Appointment. TV.

He may not have the greatest or most informed opinion, but you’d be lying if you said it wasn’t entertaining. That’s why he has hosted SNL a handful of times…I would say that I also considered Joel Klatt and Doug Glanville because their content and insight is incredible.

7) Best Play by Play Announcer

– Arlo White (NBC)
– Al Michaels (NBC)
– Dan Shulman (ESPN)
– Ian Darke (ESPN)
– Ian Eagle (CBS/Turner)
– Doc Emrick (NBC)
– Brian Anderson (CBS/Turner)
– Dave Pasch (ESPN)
– Mike Tirico (ESPN)

My Pick: Ian Eagle

Why:

There are excellent names on this list. Doc Emrick is the pro of pros and should have been my pick. However, I’ve fallen in love with the job Ian Eagle does. He is that great mix of “New School” and “Old School”. He has this impeccable skill of remaining calm and professional while emphasizing excitement on a huge play. Awesome sense of humor and has that ability of making a blowout sound interesting.

8) Best Game Analyst

– Bill Raftery (Fox/CBS)
– John Smoltz (Fox/MLB Network)
– Jay Bilas (ESPN)
– Cris Collinsworth (NBC)
– Eddie Olczyk (NBC)
– Hubie Brown (ESPN)
– Bill Walton (ESPN)
– Taylor Twellman (ESPN)

My Pick: Eddie Olczyk

Why:

The point I made about Emrick in the category before applies here. Eddie Olczyk is aware, he’s objective (even when his Blackhawks are on the national broadcast), and he helps teach the audience the game. John Smoltz does a similar good job, but I don’t get enough Smoltzy to hold him in that high of a regard. Hubie Brown also gets consideration because he will at least call the game he is assigned to…unlike Jeff Van Gundy.

National Hockey League

9) Best Sideline Reporter/Analyst

– Allie LaForce (CBS)
– Michele Tafoya (NBC)
– Tracy Wolfson (CBS)
– Rachel Nichols (Turner)
– David Feherty (CBS)
– Brian Engblom (NBC)
– Doris Burke (ESPN)

My Pick: Feherty

Why:

I love the work Rachel Nichols does. Doris Burke deserves more credit for what she brings to a broadcast. And Brian Engblom is a badass…But Feherty is just so…Feherty.

10) Best Newsbreaker

– Adam Schefter (ESPN)
– Ariel Helwani (MMA Fighting/Fox)
– Ken Rosenthal (Fox)
– Adrian Wojnarowski (Yahoo)
– Jay Glazer (Fox)
– Bob McKenzie (NBC/TSN)
– Chris Mortensen (ESPN)

My Pick: Adrian Wojnarowski (Yahoo)

Why:

Bob McKenzie is very close to being this guy for the NHL, but Adrian Wojnarowski is the definitive newsbreaker for the NBA…In the NFL, Schefter and Jay Glazer along with several others battle each other for that title. Ken Rosenthal is great but is in a same situation as the football guys battling with Jon Heyman and others for scoops. Only one of these guys has their own #hashtag designated to them and makes you refresh their Twitter timeline for breaking news: #WojBomb.

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 1.18.18 PM

11) Best Podcast

– Men in Blazers
– The Jay & Dan Podcast
– The BS Report
– The Art of Wrestling
– The Starters
– His & Hers

My Pick: The Jay & Dan Podcast

Why:

I don’t listen to many podcasts and I’d really like to change that, but Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole have the personalities and opinions that I want more of after they are done with a shift on FOX Sports Live. I hear ‘Men in Blazers’ is great, but I don’t watch soccer. And I don’t like Bill Simmons…like REALLY don’t like BS.

Jay and Dan PCast

12) Best in Social Media

– Katie Nolan
– Bruce Arthur
– Men in Blazers
– Richard Deitsch
– Spencer Hall
– Jay Onrait
– Scott Van Pelt
– Jay Bilas

My Pick: Richard Deitsch

Why:

Again, some very good people to choose from. Jay is hilarious and so is Van Pelt. Jay Bilas is fascinating with his hip-hop knowledge. Bruce Arthur gets plenty of Retweets. Spencer Hall gets me with his appreciation for Justified and similar TV programming. And I used to like Katie Nolan the most until she turned her platform into immature mob shaming….Richard Deitsch is my guy though. There are few people as consistently informative as Deitsch. He is unbiased and fair in his critiques of all media outlets. Deitsch also gives you credible insight into these outlets that you won’t always find elsewhere.

13) Best Media Feud

– Dan Patrick vs Colin Cowherd
– Mike Francesa vs Fox Sports 1
– Bill Simmons vs The Authority
– Keith Olbermann vs New York Daily News
– Bill Simmons vs Mike & Mike
– Jay Glazer vs ESPN
– Dan Dakich vs WEEI

I loved the Jay Glazer feud with ESPN because he was calling them out on something many have been complaining about for years. But sometimes Glazer gives me that “Guy Fieri” vibe and that’s just uncomfortable for everyone involved…Dan Patrick vs. Colin Cowherd was the most compelling, and resulted in the best Mortal Kombat style finisher. FATALITY.

14) Sports Media Entertainer of the Year – Which sports personality had the best year?

– Rebecca Lowe
– Bill Raftery
– Men in Blazers
– Pedro Martinez
– Bill Walton
– Bill Simmons
– Mike Francesa
– Bob Ley

My Pick: Bill Walton

Why:

I can only explain this with a simple question…WHEN ISN’T BILL WALTON HAVING THE BEST YEAR?

Bill Walton After Dark

Mad Men of MLB

They premiered the same night…

The “Final Episodes” of Mad Men and the 2015 Major League baseball season.  Both gave us the feel of nostalgia, with some new little twists as well…

ESPN with their K-Zone and Roger with his Mustache.

image2 (2)

The both have served as our pastime. They have captured American history in their own ways. They have kept us at the edge of our seats with drama unlike any other. They are also both HEAVILY sponsored.

As we say “goodbye” to one and “hello” to the other, let’s compare further and identify the true “Mad Men” of MLB.

Pete Campbell / Bryce Harper, Nationals

image3 (1)

Pete Campbell and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals ascended to stardom very quickly in their own way. Harper has an NL Rookie of the Year and a couple of All-Star games to his name while Pete has “Partner” as a title and Clearasil. While both are very successful, they’re also polarizing and even hated by fans. Although they may rub people the wrong way, you will rarely see them with their heads down due to a wealth of confidence…unless Pete’s in trouble.

Don Draper / Derek Jeter, Yankees

image4 (1)

Derek Jeter may be retired, but Don Draper began his farewell tour last year too. They were the faces of their organizations and legends of their craft. While Don and Jeter may not have been putting out their best work at times, they were still perennial all-stars. They also could field a pretty strong batting lineup with both of their dating histories. And they both could sell ANYTHING

Peggy Olson / Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies

image5 (1)

Peggy Olson was Don’s protege and Troy Tulowitzki has taken the reigns as the best shortstop in the league post-Jeter. The time is now for both of them. Tulowitzki has been held back by injuries while Peggy was held back by sexism in her industry. And as they show off their talents, they have become hot commodities to other teams as well.

Roger Sterling / Tony La Russa

image6 (1)

I attended Tony La Russa’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony last summer, and listening to him talk about his days as both a player and a manager reminded me of the war stories Roger Sterling tells to his clients. Neither one can stay away from the game as Roger continues to sell whatever he can while La Russa just recently took a job as chief baseball officer for the Diamondbacks. Neither one minds a midday cocktail either.

Joan Harris / Jose Abreu, White Sox

On the outside, Jose Abreu is a 6’2, 260 pound Cuban baseball Jedi and Joan is a redhead with curves like a Formula One track. These two have a lot more in common than you’d think…They both joined the majors late in their careers but made an instant impact when they got there. Joan spent years in the secretary ranks and jumped to partner while Abreu went from playing for the Cuban national team for years to MLB All-Star and unanimous AL Rookie of the Year. They also have the savviness and experience to adjust on the fly and last for a long time to come.

Ken Cosgrove / Billy Hamilton, Reds

I think we all have our favorite characters from TV shows that are no more than supporting to the story, and won’t even appear in some episodes. Ken Cosgrove is exactly one of those characters for me because he is the “Mr. Hustle” for the Sterling Cooper agency. The same can be said about Billy Hamilton of Cincinnati, whose 56 stolen bases in his first full season ranked him 2nd in the majors. Hamilton’s OBP isn’t the best for a leadoff man (.290), neither is Cosgrove’s, but he makes the opponent pay when he gets his chances.

Betty Francis / Max Scherzer, Nationals

image9 (1)

I guess this could be said about many of Scott Boras’s clients, but Betty Francis (formerly Draper) is a money chaser. Max Scherzer was one of the last high priority free agents to sign this past winter because he was waiting on the 7 year, $210 million deal that Washington happened to have lying around. And he gets to count his cash like Scrooge McDuck when he isn’t pitching every 5th day in the league’s deepest rotation. So another name that we call Betty applies to Scherzer…Frontrunner. However, there’s a reason they got to where they are now…

Megan Draper / Mike Trout, Angels

image10 (1)

Out with the Betty, in with the new…Megan Draper, I mean. Megan was Don’s MVS (most valuable secretary), so much so that he put a ring on it. Megan also took advantage of the opportunity quickly, much like Mike Trout when he hit the big leagues. Both were under-appreciated at first, as Trout was working for an MVP nod and Megan continuously auditioned for TV roles. Both got what they wanted and both are California dreaming.

Stan Rizzo / Anthony Rizzo, Cubs

image11 (1)

Besides the obvious (last name), both actually have a lot in common. Both Stan and Anthony had rough starts to their careers. Anthony only hit .141 in his first Major League stint with the Padres, and Stan was a sexist jerk…Both have improved immensely and serve as glue guys for their respective teams. Stan grew a beard, found recreational drugs, became best buds with Peggy and is no longer a jerk. Anthony has become an All-Star and isn’t afraid to mix it up with opponents to defend his teammates. Yep, glue guys.
